Promote robust Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) style monitoring of aquatic restoration projects;
Recognise the value of high quality historical data in the setting of restoration targets;
Recognise the importance of landscape-scale conservation planning and help to promote a catchment-based approach from the uplands to the coastal zone;
Advocate restoration which involves minimal human intervention and which encourages the natural repair of aquatic ecosystems;
Recognise that good restoration considers the geomorphological-hydrological-chemical controls over aquatic ecology;
Promote stakeholder engagement in target setting and encourage the formation of catchment partnerships that bring scientists, conservationists and local people together using best practice participatory approaches;
Ensure target setting takes into account projected changes in climate, land-use and pollution loading using a scenario-based approach;
Encourage the use of appropriate models to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative future scenarios.
